Imagen

Several beautiful lakes were born out of the fusion of water and volcanoes along the Guatemalan territory, inviting spots to rest and relax. Watching the sunset from a terrace over Lake Atlitan will fill your soul with the irresitible seduction of its inmensity and its unforgettable surrounding landscape. The lake´s coastline is guarded by imposing volcanoes: Tolimán, San Pedro and Atitlán, which provide this crital-clear water mirror with an incomparable majestic frame.

Regardless of the peaceful atmosphere, the lake is the vortex of a ring of interesting towns and villages spread along its shores: San Pedro La Laguna, San Lucas Tolimán, Santiago Atitlán and San Antonio Palopó. They are accessible by motorboat or catamarans, starting from the most favorite, Panajechel.

Once you have settled in Panajechel, take some time to plan your next moves in this great destination. Hiring a bike is s good choice to move around while enjoying the sights. Santander street is one of the liveliest and will often be part of your itinerary; it is full of restaurants, candy stores and local crafts. Diving in the lake is definetely an option for a tour.

It is worth mentioning that the rest of the towns and villages around the lake, hosts almost virgin aboriginal communities, loyal to their ancient lifestyle.  Furthermore, in Santiago Atitlán you will be a witness to the Cult to Maximon, the Great Grandpa. It is represented by a figure sporting a blurred but old-looking face, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, lots of colorful rags and normally a cigarrete in his mouth. Every year there is a celebration in his honor to ask for its protection.
